TikTok is a short-form video-sharing app. The Chinese company ByteDance, owns the app and it is becoming the go-to platform for K-pop. TikTok used to be Musical.ly before ByteDance acquired it. Since its release in 2016, TikTok has become a popular app with Generation Z.
According to Influencer Marketing Hub, TikTok has seen an explosive growth in users. For example in mid-2018, there were over 500 million global users. As of 2020, there are over 800 million global users and counting.
The app is the perfect platform to release new K-pop songs and dances for the K-pop industry. The platform is easy to use and is entertaining to watch 15 to 60 second videos. For instance, BTS published a 30-second preview of their lead track “On” on the app. As a result, many TikTok videos are viral sensations such as Zico’s “#AnySongChallenge”. His first Any Song TikTok video has nearly 10 million video views.
BTS joined TikTok in 2019. The group has over 9 million followers, about 53 million likes, and over 260 million views. Many followers are posting for the #ONChallenge for their lead track, “ON” from their album Map of the Soul: 7.
